Suspects arrested as teen Sri Lankan refugee killed after Chennai bar clash turns into deadly road incident

An 18-year-old Sri Lankan Tamil refugee lost her life in Chennai after a dispute that reportedly began inside a bar in Koyambedu escalated into a fatal road incident during the early hours of Sunday.

According to police, two groups allegedly got into an argument while at a private hotel bar in the Koyambedu area. Security personnel intervened and asked those involved to leave the premises, but the confrontation is said to have continued outside the venue.

Investigators said that after leaving the location, one group travelled on motorcycles while the other left in a sport utility vehicle (SUV). Police suspect the situation worsened when members of one group allegedly threw stones at the SUV, damaging the vehicle.

Authorities allege that the SUV was then driven into the motorcycles during the confrontation. Yancy, an 18-year-old Sri Lankan Tamil refugee, was thrown from the vehicle she was travelling on and suffered severe head injuries. She died at the scene. A 17-year-old girl who was with her sustained injuries and was admitted to hospital for treatment.

Police said Yancy had recently completed her Class 12 examinations and was preparing to pursue higher studies. Her mother reportedly stated that the family had been waiting for college admissions before the tragedy struck.

Following the incident, police launched an investigation using CCTV footage and other evidence collected from the area. Several suspects, including Suman Sakthivel and Balaguru alias Balakumar, have been taken into custody. Authorities said multiple arrests have been made in connection with the case, and further inquiries are continuing to determine the exact sequence of events and individual roles in the incident.

The case has drawn attention due to the tragic death of a young refugee and the circumstances under which a dispute allegedly escalated into a deadly collision on a city road. Police are continuing their investigation.
