The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’s Sulur MLA Kanagaraj died this morning. Sources said Kanagaraj suffered a massive heart attack when he was going through newspapers today.
He was 64 and is survived by his wife Rathinam, a son and a daughter. His body has been kept for public homage at his residence in Sultanpet. Leaders have expressed shock and condolence over his death.
Recently, when the DMDK was reportedly adamant to join the AIADMK-led alliance, Kanagaraj said the downfall of DMDK was triggered only because of the way in Vijayakanth spoke in the Assembly.
“DMDK might get 500 or 1,000 votes. Holding alliance talks with both the parties is a big mistake,” he was quoted as saying.
Asked about the reported remarks by Premalatha Vijayakanth that Vijayakanth had stood up against former Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa in the State assembly, Kanagaraj reportedly said that it was Jayalalithaa who made Vijayakanth the opposition leader and his behaviour had led to the fall of the party.
He also expressed hope that DMDK would join the alliance (his wish became a reality soon after that), he added that it would get some 500 to 1,000 additional votes to the alliance.
“It is her personal opinion,” he said when asked about the comments by Premalatha that the 37 AIADMK MPs had done nothing for Tamil Nadu.
