Athletes from the city, who were stranded in Turkey after a violent military coup, reached Chennai on Tuesday. While one more from Coimbatore reached her hometown straight from New Delhi.
Following a failed coup attempt which saw scores of killings in Turkey, there was anxiety about the safety of the children. They had gone there from Delhi on July 11 and returned to India on Tuesday as per the itinerary.
Earlier, they sent a WhatsApp video stating that all of them are safe and sought government help to ensure that the entire contingent comes back without any harm.
“We are safe here. There is no problem here in Trabzon (northeastern Turkey),” Tamizhselvi, one of over 10 athletes from Tamil Nadu in the contingent said in a WhatsApp video.
External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Union Sports Minister Vijay Goel had also said that all students were safe.
The Tamil Nadu government too had contacted Indian embassy officials in Turkey and assured that the school children were safe.
