The Chennai who took into their custody burglar ‘Tiruvarur’ Murugan in the Lalithaa jewellery heist case in Trichy, again seized 1kg gold that he burgled from several places across the city.
In 2018, while probing a couple of house break-ins, the Anna Nagar police nabbed Kamalakannan and Gopal — associates of Murugan. During interrogation, they found that the gang was involved in over 17 burglaries in Anna Nagar and other areas. Murugan was nabbed in Trichy.
He was taken from judicial custody and interrogated to help in recovery of jewellery. Sources said the jewellery he looted in Chennai was pledged in Madurai. Over 1 kg gold jewellery was recovered.
Following Samayapuram police’s request to interrogate Murugan in relation to the PNB case, a Srirangam court ordered custody from January 8 to January 13 to the police. With his custody coming to an end on Monday, he was produced in court.
During the submission to the magistrate prior to the handover, Samayapuram Police Inspector Madan revealed several valuables had been seized based on information sought from the accused during the custody.
Police had launched a search for him in connection with a series of burglaries reported in Anna Nagar police district. He had been arrested by the Bengaluru police for a similar crime there. The Trichy police had also launched a search for him as he along with a few others had looted the Lalithaa Jewellery showroom last year.
