Even as estranged party leader and elder brother M K Alagiri threw down the gauntlet yet again and announced a ‘mega’ rally in Chennai on September 5, DMK working president M K Stalin is getting ready to be elected as the party’s president.
The General Council of DMK will meet on August 28 to discuss regarding the elections for the post of President and Treasurer in DMK.
Sources in the DMK say that Stalin, will be elected unopposed to the post of President at the meeting. The council to be chaired by Stalin will also discuss the audit committee report of the party.
As a prelude to the election of Stalin as the party’s head, district units and various wings of DMK have passed resolutions to the effect that they accept his leadership.
If elected, Stalin will only be the second president of the party which was founded by late Dravidian great CN Annadurai in 1949. Annadurai preferred to be the general secretary of the party, however, after his demise in 1967, Karunanidhi moved the coins cleverly to take total control of the party and the government, became the president with sweeping powers piping his strong contenders, sources recalled.
Stalin is currently holding the post of treasurer in addition to being the working president. Sources said the party is also likely to elect DMK veteran Duraimurugan as the treasurer. He is presently the principal secretary of the party.
Meanwhile, Alagiri said that he will prove his strength on 5 September during the silent procession that will be carried out to Kalaignar’s Samadhi.
“Close to 75,000 to one lakh cadres will participate in it. All true followers of Karunanidhi are with me. I will follow my father’s footsteps. He said a few things to me during his final days which I cannot tell now,”
