Stalin to become DMK president unopposed, files nomination papers

DMK working president M K Stalin is set to become the party president unopposed as he is the only person who has filed the nomination for that post on Sunday, the last day for filing of nominations.

Accompanied by seniors, Stalin on Sunday filed nomination for the post of president, which has been lying vacant after the demise of his father M Karunanidhi on August 7.

The election would be held when the general council of the party meets on August 28. Stalin’s elevation as the DMK president is a foregone conclusion as all the district secretaries have filed nominations on his behalf.

The cost of filing a nomination is Rs 25,000, and all those who have filed nominations on Stalin’s behalf should also pay the same amount.

Senior leader and principal secretary Duraimurugan filed his nomination for the post of party treasurer, till now held by Stalin. All the 65 DMK district secretaries proposed the names of Stalin and Duraimurugan for the posts of president and treasurer.

Senior party leader A Raja said both Stalin and Duraimurugan would be elected “unanimously” at the general council meeting.

The announcement about the election of Stalin as party chief and Murugan as treasurer would be made in the General Council meeting of the DMK to be held on Tuesday at Chennai, said R S Bharathi.

Stalin has been functioning as the working president of the DMK since 2016 following the confinement of his father to Gopalapuram residence due to old age related ailments. Tuesday will mark his official elevation as the party president which will herald the Stalin era in the DMK.
