He said in a statement: “While Perasiriyar (as Anbazhagan is popularly known), who relentlessly served Tamil, Tamil Nadu and Dravidian movement for around 75 years, is in hospital, it will not be appropriate on my part to celebrate my birthday this year.”
The Leader of Opposition urged party leaders, functionaries and cadre to pray for the speedy recovery of the ailing veteran Dravidian leader, whom Stalin fondly calls as his ‘Periyappa’ (father’s elder brother).
“I am not in a frame of mind to celebrate my birthday at a time when Anbazhagan, who dedicated 75 years of his life for the Dravidian movement and the Tamil language, is ill,” he said. Stalin urged party cadre and leaders not to call on him on his birthday.
The health condition of DMK general secretary K Anbazhagan (98), who was admitted in the Apollo hospital on 24 February, is said to have become critical.
Reports said that he has not opened his eyes since Wednesday night and might have gone into coma. Senior DMK leaders visited the hospital to enquire about the veteran leader’s health.
