The DMK will stage a demonstration at Vellore district collectorate on July 19 to protest against the Andhra Pradesh government raising the heights of a check dam across the Palar river. The agitation will be led by party treasurer M K Stalin.
The protest is also against the Tamil Nadu government’s alleged failure to “take any action” against the Andhra Pradesh government.
A few days ago, DMK president M. Karunanidhi urged Chief Minister Jayalalithaa to hold negotiations with the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister or take the legal route to solve the Palar river dispute.
In a statement, Karunanidhi said the Andhra Pradesh government, after a gap of ten years, has started building new check dams and increasing the height of the existing check dams across the Palar river without obtaining permission from the downstream State of Tamil Nadu.
Tamil Nadu will lose its rights over Palar and even the entire river if it failed to oppose the construction of check dam by Andhra Pradesh government, Karunanidhi said, citing the remarks of people fighting against the dam construction.
The DMK leader alleged that Kanaganachiamman temple on the banks of Palar was maintained by Tamil Nadu HR and CE and it had now been forcibly taken over by Andhra Pradesh government. The power connection from Tamil Nadu had been cut off and Andhra Pradesh government had provided electricity connection to the temple.
