Stalin asks cops to take stern measures to eliminate drug menace
Chief Minister M K Stalin on Wednesday tasked police officials to take stern measures to eliminate drug menace in the state and announced several measures to take on the scourge of narcotics. No police official should abet drug peddlers, Chief Minister warned them and said he is a ‘soft CM’ only for honest officials.
Citing the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act that provides for a higher punishment if a person holding a public office commits an offence taking advantage of his official position, Stalin said he still believed that a scenario warranting invoking such stringent provisions of law would not arise.
“Police should prepare the list of kingpins and those involved in the trade, and expose them in the public. They should notify and step up vigil at places where the narcotic sale is rampant, and should classify and monitor black-spot villages/areas,” directed the Chief Minister.
The NIB should also closely monitor social media like WhatsApp and Telegram which peddlers are using to form groups to sell drugs to school and college students. “Also, students’ hostels should be monitored and the wardens should be sensitised. A toll-free number should be formed to enable the public and students to provide information secretly about the sale of narcotic substances,” he added.
