Chief Minister and AIADMK joint coordinator Edappadi K Palaniswami has said that DMK president M K Stalin was rattled by the AIADMK’s mega alliance formed for the Lok Sabha elections and Assembly by-polls.
Speaking at an election rally, he said that all the parties which won in Tamil Nadu during the previous Lok Sabha polls were on his side.
He that the erstwhile DMK government had granted approval for the expansion of the plant, when Mr. Stalin was the Minister of Industries.
In 2010, the Madras High Court ordered closure of the plant. The DMK could have ensured its permanent closure, he said. “The Supreme Court gave the interim order to reopen the plant citing submissions made by the DMK government in favour of the plant in the High Court,” he added.
As the DMK is projecting the Sterlite issue as a major topic in their campaigns in Thoothukudi, Palaniswami said, “It was MK Stalin who doled out 240 acres for Sterlite’s expansion when he was the Industries minister in 2009.
The DMK government had failed to close down the copper smelter in 2010 when the court directed to do so. Now, they are applying double standards on the issue. Had they closed down the unit following court order in 2010, people would not have suffered, he added.
EPS further said: “Our alliance had won all the 39 seats in the State during the 2014 Lok Sabha polls. We should sweep the polls this time as well, in order to elect Prime Minister Narendra Modi again.”
