Hundreds of students protested on Thursday night at SRM Institute of Technology near Chennai after a student was allegedly sexually harassed in the hostel by a worker.
A second-year undergraduate student said she was sexually harassed by a male worker who masturbated at her in the hostel lift on Thursday afternoon.
A student said, “the male gardener masturbated at her in the lift. She had pressed the 4th floor button and he, the 6th. But the man moved the lift to the 8th floor. He did not let her go until she screamed.”
One of the students who did not want to be identified, said that it took two to three hours for the authorities to scourge through the CCTV camera footage to identify the perpetrator. It was only then that the hostel warden believed the student’s story.
A post written by a student on social media also mentioned that the warden insuinitated that such things happened to ‘north indian’ girls. When the warden refused to listen to their complaints, a bunch of students decided to take up the matter strongly.
SRM University Vice Chancellor Sandeep Sancheti, however, denied the allegations of inaction and said the administration would look into the complaint.
“Students are discussing with us. Whatever the matter is, it will be taken care of. If there is a matter, it will be inquired,” Sancheti said.
Police officials who reached the protest spot said that the protesters dispersed after assurances from the university administration to look into the matter
