Twenty seven fishermen from Tamil Nadu have been arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy on the charge of fishing in the island nation waters.
Pudukottai Assistant Director of Fisheries Kumaresen said, the Lankan Navy also impounded the four country boats of the fishermen from nearby Nagapattinam, Thondi and Pudukottai.
The arrest is the latest in a series of arrests of Tamil Nadu fishermen by the Sri Lankan navy, despite ongoing talks by both governments on the issue.
The fishermen have been arrested for allegedly straying into Sri Lankan waters. The authorities apprehended 27 fishermen along wit their four boats off Delft island.
The investigation into the matter is underway at Karainagar, the north of the island nation.
Straying of Indian and Sri Lankan fishermen into each other’s waters is a recurrent problem as terrorities on the sea are not clearly demarcated.
