After Cyclone Gaja made landfall on Friday in Tamil Nadu and killed at nearly 50 people, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday said it will re-intensify into a cyclonic storm.
“Squally wind speed reaching 55-65 kmph gusting to 75 kmph is prevailing over Southeast Arabian Sea and Lakshadweep area. It is very likely to gradually increase becoming gale wind speed reaching 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph during next 24 hours,” the IMD said in its official release.
Official sources said a total of 1,27,448 trees were uprooted when gale winds, gusting upto 120 kmph, lashed the districts when the cyclone made the landfall.
Efforts were on to clear the uprooted trees to streamline the transport facilities, besides clearing the toppled electric poles and replacing them with new ones, to ensure that life returns to normal at the earliest in the cyclone hit areas.
