The Tamil film industry has come to the help of people affected by Cyclone Gaja in the central and coastal districts of Tamil Nadu.

Already, members of Rajini Makkal Mandram and other fan clubs are involved in relief works. And on Monday, Sivakumar, Suriya, Jyotika, Karthi and the family’s own production 2D Entertainment provided Rs 50 lakh for Gaja cyclone relief fund.

Vijay Sethupathi has announced Rs 25 lakh worth essential commodities to the affected areas in the delta region. The actor will be providing torch lights, tree saplings, monetary assistance to reform the affected farmlands and he has also asked his fans club members to file a detailed report on the affected areas.

Sivakarthikeyan has donated Rs 10 lakh to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund and has sent Rs 10 lakh worth relief materials to the cyclone-hit victims.

After Cyclone Gaja made landfall on Friday in Tamil Nadu and killed at nearly 50 people, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday said it will re-intensify into a cyclonic storm.

“Squally wind speed reaching 55-65 kmph gusting to 75 kmph is prevailing over Southeast Arabian Sea and Lakshadweep area. It is very likely to gradually increase becoming gale wind speed reaching 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph during next 24 hours,” the IMD said in its official release.

Official sources said a total of 1,27,448 trees were uprooted when gale winds, gusting upto 120 kmph, lashed the districts when the cyclone made the landfall.

Efforts were on to clear the uprooted trees to streamline the transport facilities, besides clearing the toppled electric poles and replacing them with new ones, to ensure that life returns to normal at the earliest in the cyclone hit areas.
