Shanmugam appointed as TN Chief Secretary, Tripathy is DGP

The Tamil Nadu government today named K Shanmugam as its new Chief Secretary and J K Tripathy as the Director General of Police.

An official statement from Chief Secretary Girija Vaidyanathan said, “Thiru K. Shanmugam, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary to Government, Finance Department is transferred and posted as Chief Secretary to Government vice Dr (Tmt). Girija Vaidyanathan, IAS, retiring from service on 30.06.2019 After Noon.” The appointment has been made by order of the Governor.

Another order said: “In pursuace of Tamil Nadu Police (Reforms) Act, 2013 (Act No.22 of 2013) and the directions of the Supreme Court of India, New Delhi second and third read above in the case of Prakash Singh & Others, this Government has forwarded a proposal to the Union Public Service Commission, New Delhi, in the letter fourth read above requesting to convene the Empanelment Committee Meeting to prepare a panel of IPS officers for appointment to the post of Director General of Police and Head of Police Force, in lieu of the retirement of Thiru T.K. Rajendran, IPS, on completion of two years of his tenure as Director General of Police and Head of Police Force, Tamil Nadu, on 30.06.2019.”

It said further: “Accordingly, the Union Public Service Commission, New Delhi, convened the Empanelment Committee Meeting on 20.06.2019 at New Delhi and communicated its recommendations for inclusion of IPS officers in the panel for appointment for the post of Director General of Police and Head of Police Force, Tamil Nadu, in the letter fifth read above.”

“The Government have examined the recommendations of the Commission carefully and independently along with their service records,” it said and added: “The Government of Tamil Nadu after due consideration appoint Thiru J K Tripathy, IPS (TN: 1985) as Director General of Police and Head of Police Force, Tamil Nadu, with effect from 01.07.2019.”

It is to be noted that Shanmugam is currently the Finance Secretary, while Tripathy had earlier served as the Commissioner of Greater Chennai city police.
