Seven students injured in ABVP-NSUI clash at EFLU

A confrontation between members of the ABVP and NSUI at the English and Foreign Languages University campus in Hyderabad left at least seven students injured, according to police.

The violence occurred on August 14, following tensions that had developed during an ABVP protest at a women’s hostel the previous day.

NSUI alleged that ABVP members used caste-based insults against a student and attacked the students’ union vice-president. It further claimed that some ABVP members used sticks and glass bottles during the confrontation.

The ABVP presented a different account. Its EFLU unit said the dispute began after a hostel warden allegedly made inappropriate remarks to two female students who had requested accommodation. According to the ABVP, its members organised a peaceful demonstration over the issue and also raised concerns about hostel conditions, including sanitation and drinking water. The organisation alleged that NSUI members attempted to disrupt the protest.

Police said four injured students belonged to NSUI and three to ABVP. Four NSUI members with serious head injuries were admitted to hospital.

Complaints and counter-complaints were filed at Osmania University police station, resulting in cases against members of both organisations.

Police said seven ABVP members were arrested and remanded in judicial custody. Seven NSUI members named in a case were also arrested but subsequently received station bail. The ABVP’s EFLU unit has called for an impartial investigation and demanded the immediate release of its members.
