“Scene” Movie Review

A Gripping Blend of Mystery, Comedy and Thrills!

Suriya delivers a refreshing and captivating performance as DSP Inbaraj, an unconventional police officer whose arrogance, sharp intelligence and unpredictable behaviour make him a fascinating character. Despite his experience and exceptional investigative abilities, he is feared even by his superior officer (Lal). His distinctive attitude, witty mannerisms and occasional comic moments bring a refreshing dimension to the character.

Inbaraj has repeatedly expressed his desire to resign from the police force, but the higher authorities refuse to accept his request. Meanwhile, a series of bizarre, psycho-style murders involving a group of youngsters (Nazlin), an auto driver and a woman running a box store creates a challenging situation for the police department. Some officers who dislike Inbaraj accuse him of having arrested the wrong person while allowing the actual murderer to escape.

A fascinating twist unfolds when Inbaraj encounters his favourite psycho killer. It is then revealed that he has lost his eyesight. His aggressive behaviour, unusual instructions to colleagues and insistence that everyone maintain a certain distance from him are all revealed to be attempts to conceal his blindness. This also explains his determination to leave the police force.

Although the department decides against pursuing the investigation, Inbaraj takes matters into his own hands. Without revealing his real intention, he appoints a capable woman (Nazriya), who has a tremor in her hand, as his assistant under the pretext of helping with household responsibilities.

The story becomes even more intriguing with the introduction of his father (Anandaraj), a former police officer with remarkable crime-solving abilities but troubled by memory loss, and other interesting characters who add further layers to the investigation. Inbaraj eventually assembles an unusual team, including a police constable who admires him and another who dislikes him, to track down the dangerous criminal.

Director Jithu Madhavan deserves special appreciation for the imaginative treatment of the story. The cleverly designed house that enables Inbaraj to move around despite his blindness, his confident movements in public guided by his assistant over the phone, and the unexpected complications that follow are brilliantly conceived. The sequence in which a new psycho killer, aware of Inbaraj’s blindness, arrives at his house with murderous intentions is particularly gripping. Even the scientific explanation behind the car-burning sequence adds an interesting touch.

Above all, Suriya is outstanding in this distinctive role. His expressions, anger, sadness, unique mannerisms and entertaining dialogue delivery make Inbaraj memorable. A thoroughly engaging entertainer that successfully blends suspense, humour, mystery and thrills.
