SC orders Centre to give environment clearance within four weeks to carry our maintenance work at Mullai Periyar dam
The Supreme Court has directed the central government to grant environmental clearance within four weeks for maintenance work on the Mullaperiyar dam.
This decision comes after the court’s intervention to resolve disputes between Kerala and Tamil Nadu regarding the dam’s safety and maintenance.
The court also instructed both states to cooperate and expedite the necessary permissions for the work, emphasizing the need for a coordinated approach.
The newly formed supervisory committee was instructed to engage with stakeholders within a week and submit a report within four weeks.
The court said repair work may be carried out after the monsoon season in September or October.
In the previous hearing on May 19, the apex court had directed the two States and the Centre to facilitate talks to address and resolve long-contentious issues like cutting of trees blocking access to the dam, transportation of material to repair the approach roads, and grouting of the main super-structure of the dam.
