SC Judge turns down Chidambaram’s plea, lookout notice issued against PC

The high drama over Congress leader P Chidambaram, which started late on Tuesday evening, continued today too, with the Supreme Court today saying the senior Congress leader’s plea challenging the HC order will be put before the Chief Justice of India to consider for urgent listing.

Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal mentioned the case before the Bench headed by Justice N V Ramana. Justice N V Ramana told senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Chidambaram, that the case will be put before the CJI for urgent hearing.

Chidambaram filed plea for interim bail in Supreme Court saying that Delhi High Court’s observation is “completely baseless and supported by no material whatsoever”.

The ED has issued a lookout notice against P Chidambaram after failing to locate the senior Congress leader. All eyes are now on CJI after the Supreme Court said it couldn’t pass an order on Chidambaram immediately.

The CBI had on Tuesday issued a notice to Chidambaram asking him to appear before the investigation officer “within two hours”, following which a team of ED officials also reached his residence to arrest him, but failed. Chidambaram’s lawyer, meanwhile, has requested the probe agencies not to take any action till a hearing at the Supreme Court.

On Tuesday, Chidambaram’s plea for an anticipatory bail was rejected by the Delhi High Court giving probe agencies opportunity to arrest the veteran politician. The Delhi High Court had been granting Chidambaram protection from arrest since July last year.

The Central Bureau of Investigation has accused Chidambaram, Karti, INX Media, and unknown officials of the finance ministry in the INX Media case. INX Media was once owned by Indrani and Peter Mukerjea, the couple now in jail in an unrelated murder case.
