SC asks Kerala, Tamil Nadu to address on which committee will be ‘more effective’ to watch over Mullaperiyar dam

The Supreme Court of India has called upon the states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu to present their views on which committee would be the most effective in overseeing the safety and management of the Mullaperiyar Dam.

This comes amid ongoing concerns about the dam’s structural integrity and the safety of the millions of people living downstream.

The Mullaperiyar Dam, located on the Periyar River in Kerala but serving Tamil Nadu, has been a contentious issue between the two states for years. Kerala has raised alarms about the dam’s aging structure, while Tamil Nadu depends on it for crucial water supplies.

In its latest directive, the Supreme Court asked both states to submit detailed responses regarding the formation of a committee that will be responsible for overseeing the dam’s safety, operational efficiency, and structural integrity.

The next hearing on the matter has been scheduled for February 19, 2025, when the court expects to review the submissions from both states. The composition of the committee will be a key focus of the hearing, as its decisions will directly impact the safety of the dam and the people living in its shadow.

The outcome of this case remains pivotal for water management and inter-state relations, as well as the well-being of the communities that rely on the dam’s functionality.
