Sathankulam deaths: South zone IG, Thoothukudi SP shifted

After a policeman verbally abused a Judicial Magistrate who was probing the Sathankulam custodial deaths, South Zone IG, Thoothukudi Superintendent of Police, ASP, DSP and others have been transferred.

According to an order from Additional Chief Secretary to Government S K Prabhakar, S Murugan, Inspector General of Police, Economic Offences Wing, Chennai, has been posted as Inspector General of Police, South Zone, Madurai, replacing K P Shanmuga Rajeswaran retiring on superannuation on 30 June.

S Jeyakumar, Superintendent of Police, Villupuram district, has been transferred adn posted as Superintendent of Police, Thoothukudi district, replacing Arun Balagopalan, who is brought to the compulsory wait at office of the Director General of Police.

CCTV footage released by traders in Sathankulam area here on Monday on the events that led to the arrest of P Jeyaraj (58) and J Beniks (31) in Tuticorin district on June 19 night — both died two days later in judicial custody — has exposed police lies that the father-son duo had fallen on the road, injuring themselves in the process, before they were arrested.

A judicial inquiry into the deaths of P Jeyaraj and his son J Bennix due to the alleged police torture by at the Sathankulam police station in Thoothukudi, revealed that nearly a dozen of people were beaten up and tortured by the same police officers two weeks ago, according to reports.

According to the FIR, a police constable went on a patrol to the area around 9.15 pm. “APJ mobiles shop was open beyond the curfew time, violating the lockdown rules. In front of the shop, Jayaraj, Fennix and a few others were standing.

We told them not to crowd and go back to their homes. Others listened to us and went home but Jayaraj and his son sat on the ground and refused to go home, used obscene language at us and rolled on the ground. They got internal injuries because of that,” reads the FIR.
