Sathankulam child killing: Family refuses to accept body

The family of the eight-year-old who was killed by two teenage boys in Kalvilai, Sathankulam has sought a thorough probe into the case.

The family refused to accept the body from the hospital and has demanded compensation.

So far, the police have arrested two persons, one being her neighbour under The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and The SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act for sexually assaulting and murdering the child.

The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has taken suo motu cognisance of the case.

The child had gone to the house of V Mutheeswaran (18) on July 15 to watch TV.

A senior police official said the girl used to visit the house often. But on the day of the incident, Mutheeswaran had a quarrel with his father, who has mental disabilities. When she intervened, he scolded her and asked her to leave. It is said the girl threw a stone at him and he strangled her.

A few hours later, the body was found in a plastic drum on the bank of a nearby stream. It was disposed of with the help of his friend Nantheeswaran’s (18), reports said.

The police have ruled out sexual assault, even as the month claimed to have seen bite marks on the child’s face.

Sathankulam police booked the duo under Sections 302 (punishment for murder) and 201 (punishment for causing disappearance of evidence) of IPC, Sections 5 (m) r/w section 6 of POCSO Act, and Sections 3(I) (W) (l) 3 (2) (v) of SC/ST Act.
