Sangeetha withdraws divorce petition against CM Vijay, Family Court closes case
The divorce proceedings involving Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and actor C. Joseph Vijay came to an end on Friday after his wife, Sangeetha, formally withdrew the petition she had filed earlier this year before the Chengalpattu Family Court.
Appearing through video conferencing, Sangeetha informed the court that she no longer wished to pursue the case. After interacting with her and confirming her decision, Family Court Judge Sujatha accepted the request and ordered the closure of the proceedings.
Sangeetha had approached the court in February 2026 seeking dissolution of her marriage with Vijay. In her petition, she had levelled allegations of infidelity, claiming that the actor-politician had maintained an inappropriate relationship with a fellow actress.
According to the court filing, she stated that she became aware of the alleged relationship in 2021 and argued that it caused her emotional distress and irreparably affected their marriage. The petition further alleged that the situation subjected both her and their children to emotional hardship and public embarrassment.
The filing also claimed that Vijay had become emotionally distant in recent years and that she had experienced neglect and verbal disrespect during the course of the marriage.
The matter first came up for hearing in February before being adjourned to April, shortly before the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. The proceedings attracted considerable public and political attention during the campaign period.
The case also coincided with a separate legal challenge before the Madras High Court concerning disclosures made in Vijay’s election affidavit. The petition questioned a declaration stating that Vijay had extended a loan of ₹12.60 crore to Sangeetha and also raised issues relating to financial assistance reportedly provided to a private educational trust.
However, the High Court dismissed the plea after observing that an earlier petition seeking similar relief had already been rejected.
Vijay and Sangeetha first met in the mid-1990s and later registered their marriage in the United Kingdom before solemnising it in Chennai according to Hindu customs. The couple have two children—a son, Jason, and a daughter, Dhivya. With the withdrawal of the divorce petition, the family court has formally concluded the matrimonial case.
