Sahitya Akademi award will motivate me to write more: S Ramakrishnan

Tamil writer and film script writer S Ramakrishnan has won the Sahitya Akademi award for 2018 for his novel Sancharam, poignantly capturing the life of nagaswaram players in Karisal Bhoomi — the arid lands — of Tamil Nadu.

Ramakrishnan is a full-time writer who has been active over the last 27 years in diverse areas of Tamil literature like short stories, novels, plays, children’s literature and translations.

Born in 1966, Ramakrishnan is a native of Mallankinar village of Virudhunagar district of Tamilnadu. His short stories are noted for their modern story-telling style in Tamil. He had, as editor, brought out the literary publication, Atcharam for five years. His short stories and articles have been translated and published in English, Malayalam, Hindi, Bengali, Telugu, Kannada and French.

“While the prize comes as recognition for a person who opted for a career in writing, it also sheds light on the lives of the nagaswaram players,” said Ramakrishnan, who dropped his doctoral thesis on William Faulkner to become a full-time writer.

“Its a big recognition for my writing and a big honour for Nagaswaram musiciains”, an elated Ramakrishan said on Wednesday for winning the Sahitya Akademi Award for the year 2018.

The 52-year-old writer, who has written more than 125 books in diverse areas of Tamil literature, including short stories, novels, plays and books for children in a career spanning three decades, said the Sahitya Award would motivate and encourage him to write more.

Tamil Nadu Minister for Tamil Official Language and Tamil Culture K Pandiarajan, and leaders of various political
parties, including DMK President M K Stalin and MDMK General Secretary Vaiko congratulated Ramakrishnan for being chosen for the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award.

Ramakrishnan has worked in Tamil movie Baba, the Rajinikanth starrer and Sandakozhi and Sandakozhi-2 with Vishal in the lead role, Dhaam Dhoom and Unnale Unnale.
