“Saala” Movie Review

“Saala” unfolds in the vibrant yet gritty backdrop of Royapuram, centering around the power struggle to reopen the famous Parvathy Bar. Two rival factions, led by Saala (Dheeran) and Thangadurai (Charles Vinoth), clash over control, while a passionate anti-alcohol activist, Punitha (Reshma Venkatesh), stands firmly against the reopening, advocating for the welfare of the community.

The story takes root in Saala’s past, where Guna (Aruldoss), a local gangster, adopts him after the boy saves his life in a violent confrontation. Growing up under Guna’s protection, Saala’s loyalty leads him on a mission to reclaim the Parvathy Bar for the man who raised him. This personal quest sets the stage for the intense conflict over the bar’s future.

On the other side, Thangadurai, ruthless in his ambition, poses a significant challenge to Saala’s plans. Meanwhile, Punitha, driven by her concern for children and the negative impact of liquor shops near schools, temples, and hospitals, opposes both factions. Initially, her activism irritates Saala, but her sincerity gradually earns his respect, drawing him into her cause.

As the power struggle intensifies, Thangadurai escalates the conflict by selling illicit liquor through Saala’s outlets, leading to unexpected and severe consequences. The narrative shifts from the battle for bar ownership to the broader implications of unchecked alcohol distribution, with Saala finding himself deeply entangled in the moral and social ramifications of his actions.

Directed by Manipaul, “Saala” delivers the quintessential masala flick with elements of romance, action, and drama. While it treads familiar ground with its portrayal of North Chennai’s power dynamics and bar brawls, the film manages to keep viewers engaged through strong performances. Dheeran shines as the charismatic Saala, and Reshma Venkatesh’s portrayal of Punitha adds depth to the film. The supporting cast, including Aruldoss and Srinath, also contribute significantly to the film’s appeal.

Though “Saala” may not introduce novel ideas, it stands as a solid entertainer with enough spice to hold the audience’s attention.
