Rotary Orange Vison Center inauguration

Rotary International District 3232 with Rotary  Club of Chennai Thiruvanmiyur, Rotary Club of Glenhaven, Australia  along with Pammal Sankara Eye Hospital  inaugurated the Rotary Orange Vision Center at Ambattur on 18th March.  The center was inaugurated by District Governor Rtn Muthupalaniappan and Rotary Club President Rtn. Sarada Ramani.  This fully equipped Orange Vision center will cater to  more than 1.2 lakhs underprivileged people in the locality.  This is  part of the 4 vision centers planned to be established by Rotary Club of Chennai Thiruvanmiyur with a project cost of 46.00 lakhs  The other centers would be coming up soon at Thiruvallur, Kannammal chaitram and Pallipuattu.   These rural centers would be covering a population of 60000 people each.

Each of these vision centers are equipped with  the following equipment

Ophthalmic Equipment from Aurolab,  Fundus Camera Forus Optical Showcase,   Various eye examination essentials, Hand held devices Computers Laser Printer,  apart from connecting through internet telemetry with Pammal Sankara Eye hospital.  Each vision center will also have a two wheeler which will be used for door to door screening for any eye problem and for minor issues will be referred to the Vision center.   For major surgeries they would be referred to Sankara Eye hospital.  All these would be available for free or at a highly subsidized rates for the underprivileged sections of the society.

36 million people are blind in the world. Of these 36 million, 8.8 million live in India Common causes of blindness in India – Cataract, Uncorrected Refractive Errors, Age related macular degeneration, Glaucoma, Diabetic Retinopathy, Corneal Opacity and Trachoma

80% of blindness is treatable 200 million people need eye care in India, largely in rural areas; but only around 10% are covered through existing health care facilities and eye screening camps.

The objective of this initiative is to enable Avoidable Blindness Free India. We are fully aware that this process requires innovative approach with focus, commitment and support over a period of several years from the involved partners and stake holders.

Orange is adopting a transformational strategy in the area of
