In a first of its kind move in DMK, party’s working president M K Stalin’s son Udhayanidhi is all set to hoist its flag in seven locations on July 15, a ‘privilege’ extended to him despite not holding any post.
This has evoked mixed reactions within the party and in the political circles of Tamil Nadu. Flags will be hoisted on July 15 at 7 places in Kancheepuram dist as part of 95th birthday celebrations of party patriarch and actor’s grandfather, M Karunanidhi.
Party mouthpiece ‘Murasoli’ said that Udhayanidhi, its Managing Director and also a Tamil cinema actor-producer, will hoist the party flag at seven locations in DMK’s Kancheepuram West limits and give a “special address” there.
The announcement has raised eyebrows in the principal opposition party which has so far maintained the strict discipline in giving anyone the honour of hosting the party flag.
DMK sources sought to play down the matter, saying it was a general practice in the party to allow any of its workers to unfurl the flag.
They said anyone associated with the DMK can do so, with the ‘privilege’ also being extended to ‘language martyrs,’ referring to those who had participated in the anti-Hindi agitation of the 1960s.
The article in Murasoli also said that besides other functionaries of the party’s Kancheepuram district (North) unit, the secretary of the district unit TM Anbarasan and deputy secretary of the youth wing Mahesh Poyyamozhi would also participate in the event on July 15. Poyyamozhi is also the president of Udhayanidhi Stalin’s fans association.
