Revealed: Ajith was kee to remake Rajinikanth’s Johnny

Ajith remade Superstar Rajinikanth’s blockbuster film Billa with director Vishnuvardhan and tasted a box office success in 2007. The film catapulted his career to dizzy heights.

In a recent interview, veteran director Mahendran’s son John Roshan Mahendran revealed that Ajith once met his dad and expressed his interest to remake Rajinikanth’s Johnny.

John, who directed Vijay starrer Sachin, said, “Ajith wanted my dad to helm the remake. He was even ready to produce the film and my dad too felt that Ajith would be perfect for the remake. But as my dad wasn’t interested in remakes, the project didn’t materialize.”

John Mahendran revealed about Ajith’s old discussion with his father in his recent interview. Ajith had met John’s father and stated his wish to remake Rajinikanth’s dual avatar in Johnny since he was the one who directed the original version.

Mahendran had also felt that Ajith would be a perfect cast for the remake, and had even thought of producing the film. But the film didn’t proceed further as J Mahendran then got disinterested in doing the remake as he believed that classic hits should not be touched again.

There has been a talk of top actors in Kollywood taking a pay cut of almost 50 per cent to tide over the current COVID crisis. In wake of this, there had been reports saying Ajith had emailed producer Boney Kapoor of his upcoming film, Valimai, saying that his pay can be discussed whenever the film is ready for release.
