Record spike of 28,701 Covid cases takes India’s tally to 8,78,254

Union Health Ministry has said total positive cases of Covid-19 in the country stand at 8,78,254, including 3,01,609 active cases, 5,53,471 cured/discharged/migrate. The death toll stands at 23,174.

Several states reported their highest single-day spike on Sunday. Among them was Gujarat, where the tally rose by 879 to reach 41,897. A new daily record of 1,933 cases pushed the coronavirus tally in Andhra Pradesh to 29,168 on Sunday.

The United States, the country hardest hit by the coronavirus pandemic, on Sunday recorded 59,747 new cases over the last 24-hour period, according to a tally from Johns Hopkins University. The number of cases in the US has rocketed in recent weeks, hitting a record of 66,528 in 24 hours on Saturday.

The country has now registered a total of 3,301,820 infections, the Baltimore-based university said in its latest data as of 8:30 pm (0030 GMT Monday). The death toll stood at 135,171 with 442 additional deaths counted.
