Why Ramasamy, Vijayadharani given Congress legislature party postings?
Six-time MLA K R Ramasamy was on Monday named as the president of Congress Legislative Party in Tamil Nadu Assembly. Colachel MLA J G Prince will be the vice-president, while Vilavancode legislator S Vijayadharani will be the party’s whip in the House.
“In deference to the views of the party MLAs, K R Ramasamy will be the Congress Legislature Party leader and Vijayadharani our whip,” Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president E V K S Elangovan said.
“We will continue to work with DMK and function as a constructive opposition party,” he told reporters.
Both the legislators were present at the Satyamurthy Bhavan, the state party headquarters, and were hounoured by draping of shawls by Elangovan.
Ramasamy said he would ensure floor coordination with senior alliance partner DMK to play the role of a strong opposition to the ruling AIADMK.
Earlier, a tight race was on for the coveted Congress Legislature Party leader’s post, with the Congress emerging the third largest party in the state Assembly in the recently concluded elections.
Ramasamy won from Karaikudi by polling 93,419 votes defeating his AIADMK rival Karpagam Ilango who got 75,136 votes. Vijayadharani was re-elected from Vilavancode by a margin of over 30,000 votes.
