Rajnath Singh accuses Congress of encouraging ‘anarchy’ through protests

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has criticised the Congress and its political allies over protests in New Delhi, alleging that they are attempting to create political instability by drawing inspiration from the events that led to the fall of Bangladesh’s government in 2024.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Singh said democratic freedoms should not be used to justify disorder or weaken constitutional institutions. He accused opposition groups of directing young people’s energy towards political confrontation rather than constructive activities and nation-building.

The minister alleged that statements by certain opposition leaders about changing the government reflected an effort to undermine democratic institutions. He also claimed that references to Bangladesh demonstrated an interest in pursuing a similar course of political change in India.

Singh invoked Mahatma Gandhi’s decision to suspend the non-cooperation movement after the Chauri Chaura violence. He argued that the Congress, despite its historical association with Gandhi, was acting inconsistently with his principles by allegedly encouraging confrontation following electoral setbacks.

The Congress and its allies have been at the centre of political tensions surrounding the protests in the capital. Singh’s remarks added to the ongoing exchange of accusations between the ruling establishment and opposition parties.
