Chennai residents may have a reprieve from harsh weather for a few more days with evening showers set to continue till Thursday.
The Met department predicted that the city will receive more showers in the course of the week. Thundershowers in the wee hours brought the mercury levels and humidity to an extent.
Southwest Monsoon has already made an onset over Chennai. However, Tamil Nadu including Chennai lies in the rain shadow area. Due to this, during the Southwest Monsoon, Chennai receives 40 percent of its annual rainfall.
Major chunk of rainfall is observed during the Northeast Monsoon between October and December. Even the monthly average for June is not impressive and stands at a mere 55.9 mm.
The city has been relatively cool for the past two days as the sea breeze set in on time. The week began on a pleasant note as overnight thundershowers had brought down the day temperature to 33 degree Celsius on Monday.
The Met department said the rains are likely to continue till 22 June. “The temperature is mild and its cloudy. It is much easy for us move in this traffic. This is a big change from last week.” said a commuter.
