Rain continues to lash Tamil Nadu; holiday declared for schools and colleges in Chennai, Kancheepuram

The remnant of Cyclone Ditwah continued to trigger heavy rainfall in Chennai and its neighbouring districts on Tuesday (December 2, 2025).

While parts of northern Tamil Nadu are likely to receive heavy rain till Wednesday morning, it may be the turn of districts along the ghat areas on Wednesday (December 3, 2025), as the system moves inland. Chennai is also likely to experience moderate rainfall on Wednesday.

The slow-moving remnant of the cyclone weakened into a depression and lies over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of west-central Bay of Bengal, about 40 km east-southeast of Chennai.

The centre of the system is positioned at a distance of 25 km from north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts. It is likely to weaken into a well-marked low-pressure area by midnight on Tuesday.

The weather system has ensured that the State’s seasonal rainfall remains slightly higher than the normal of 36.1 cm. The downpour in Chennai has reduced the deficit to 8%, as the city received 62 cm against the seasonal normal of 67 cm.

The Tamil Nadu government will give a compensation of ₹20,000 per hectare to farmers whose crops were affected by the rain in October, Minister for Revenue and Disaster Management K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran said on Tuesday (December 2, 2025).
