President Droupadi Murmu undertakes dive sortie in submarine

President Droupadi Murmu undertook a sortie onboard the Indian Navy’s indigenous Kalvari class submarine INS Vaghsheer at Karwar Naval Base in Karnataka.

Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi accompanied the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces while undertaking a sortie on the Western Seaboard.

This maiden sortie onboard a Kalvari Class Submarine by President Droupadi Murmu is the second by the President of India, after former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, who had boarded a submarine in 2006 at Visakhapatnam.

It was a historic moment to see President Droupadi Murmu, attired in a Navy uniform with a matching cap, taking a two-hour sortie in the indigenous INS Vaghsheer submarine off the coast of Karwar today. The Kalvari Class Submarine built by Mazagon Dock features advanced stealth, combat systems and weaponry.

The maiden sortie onboard the indigenous submarine reflects the President’s continued engagement with the armed forces in operational settings. In November last year, the President witnessed an operational demonstration onboard the indigenous aircraft INS Vikrant.

In her observations after the sortie, the President has written that it was indeed a very special experience to sail, dive and spend time with the sailors and officers onboard the submarine. She noted that the demonstration by INS Vaghsheer demonstrated the crew’s exceptional preparedness and dedication.
