Prakash Raj enters politics to contest in LS polls. Actor-filmmaker Prakash Raj has announced his formal entry into politics and said he will contest as an independent candidate in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
“Happy New Year to everyone. A new beginning… more responsibility.. with your support I will be contesting in the coming parliament elections as an independent candidate,” he said in a tweet.
The national award winning actor added: “Details of the constituency soon. Ab ki baar Janatha ki Sarkar in parliament too…”
It is to be noted that the actor has been vocal about his views on the current BJP-led government at the Centre. He has also been one of those seeking justice for his friend and journalist Gauri Lankesh, who was shot outside her residence in September 2017.
Prakash Raj is the third prominent actor after Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan to enter politics in recent years. Raj is known for his anti-BJP stance. He has also been vocal in seeking justice for his friend and journalist Gauri Lankesh, who was shot outside her residence.
Raj was a close follower of Gauri’s father, P. Lankesh, who ran the vernacular journal Lankesh Patrike. Very close to the family, the actor had repeatedly questioned Modi’s silence on the murder, drawing personal attacks from the Prime Minister’s supporters.
Raj is likely to contest from his home state of Karnataka, though he is yet to declare this officially. He would later share details of the constituency from where he would contest, Raj said.
