Pon Radhakrishnan distances himself from Maneka Gandhi’s Jallikattu comments

Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan today distanced himself from the comments made by Union Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi, who said on Sunday that jallikattu (taming of bulls) is a dangerous sport.
Speaking to reporters in Nagercoil today, Radhakrishnan said jallikattu would sure be conducted and even cricket and kabadi too are dangerous sports.
Meanwhile, Maneka’s comments have been opposed by Tamil and jallikattu activists too.
On Sunday, in a brief chat with reporters on her arrival at the Chennai airport, Maneka said Tamil Nadu has several intellectuals. ”We should look for good things to promote”, she added.
Terming jallikattu, a rural and traditional sport which would be held during the four-day pongal festivities in January every year, as a dangerous sport, she said it has to be consigned to history.
The BJP has a very important role to play in Tamil Nadu. ”It has many more things to do and we should look for good thingsto promote”, the Minister said.
The annual event could not be held last year and this year due to the ban imposed by Supreme Court and various political parties in the State has been appealing to the Centre to take steps to lift the ban, by removing bulls from the list of performing animals.
It is to be noted that Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa also took up the issue with Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging him to take all stepsto get the stay vacated.
