Polls to elect next Vice-President on September 9
The Election Commission of India has announced that the election to choose the next Vice-President of India will be held on September 9, following the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar.
According to the schedule, the last date for filing nominations is August 21, while polling will take place on September 9. The votes will be counted on the same day as the polling.
The Ministry of Home Affairs confirmed the vacancy through a notification issued on July 22, 2025. According to the law, the election to fill such a vacancy must be held as soon as possible. The person elected will serve a full five-year term from the date they take office.
The 17th Vice-Presidential Election will be held according to the rules set out in the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Act, 1952.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Manish Tewari took a jibe at the Election Commission of India over the Vice Presidential election, citing the Special Intensive Survey. He posted on X saying, “With the schedule for Vice President announced, MPs should perhaps be ready with their 11 documents to prove their citizenship. God forbid, the Election Commission decides to carry out an SIR Special Intensive Revision of the Electoral Roll even after announcing the election schedule. With this Election Commission, anything is possible!”
