Tamil Nadu Director General of Police T K Rajendran today transferred the Pollachi sexual assault case to the state’s elite investigation wing- CBCID.
He has also stated that a woman officer would head the investigation team. Following this, the local police would now hand over the case to the CBCID.
Earlier today, the four accused in the Pollachi sexual assault case including Thirunavukarasu have been detained under Goondas Act in the august of the Coimbatore district collector.
The four men Thirunavukkarasu, Sathish, Sabarirajan and Vasanthakumar, all in their 20’s are accused of sexually assaulting a number of young women in Pollachi over a period of time. As per reports, more than 50 women across Tamil Nadu have been lured and sexually harassed by the gang.
A total of eight arrests were made in Pollachi, located in Tamil Nadu’s northwestern Coimbatore district, in February and March.
Four were booked under sections of the IPC including those dealing with sexual harassment (354 A) and assault (354 B). They were also booked under sections of the Information Technology Act, 2000, and the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Women’s Harassment Act. The police say they are contemplating slapping the Goondas Act on the others.
A senior police officer monitoring the investigation said the four youth, all in their 20s, were arrested in the last week of February for allegedly blackmailing and sexually harassing a 19-year-old-girl in Pollachi.
Many female Facebook users across Tamil Nadu have been allegedly lured and sexually harassed by a four-member gang from Pollachi, near Coimbatore, according to police.
