“I would like to say one thing to the department (police), you have filed one false case based on version of one girl, remaining 99 are working for me. please don’t trouble them. I will surrender voluntarily after the case is over.”
This is what 26-year-old Thirunavukkarasu, a financier who was arrested on March 5 for sexually assaulting a college girl in Pollachi along with three of his friends, can be heard saying in an audio that has gone viral across Tamil Nadu.
The police suspect that he and his three friends had trapped more young girls and sexually assaulted them and are conducting an intense probe.
A total of eight arrests were made in Pollachi, located in Tamil Nadu’s northwestern Coimbatore district, in February and March.
Four were booked under sections of the IPC including those dealing with sexual harassment (354 A) and assault (354 B). They were also booked under sections of the Information Technology Act, 2000, and the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Women’s Harassment Act. The police say they are contemplating slapping the Goondas Act on the others.
A senior police officer monitoring the investigation said the four youth, all in their 20s, were arrested in the last week of February for allegedly blackmailing and sexually harassing a 19-year-old-girl in Pollachi.
Many female Facebook users across Tamil Nadu have been allegedly lured and sexually harassed by a four-member gang from Pollachi, near Coimbatore, according to police.
The Coimbatore district police on Monday recovered four such videos recorded by the accused. Speaking to the media, police superintendent R Pandiyarajan said that a new victim had been identified from the videos. “Unless the woman, who is married, comes forward to lodge a complaint, we can do nothing,” he said.
Meanwhile, an AIADMK youth wing member Nagaraj from Pollachi has been expelled from the party after it came to light that he was allegedly involved in multiple cases of sexual harassment.
