PM Modi wraps up France–Slovakia tour, strengthens strategic and diplomatic ties
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has concluded a multi-nation visit to Slovakia and France that combined high-level diplomacy, economic engagement, and participation in global discussions at the G7 Summit. The tour marked a significant push by India to deepen partnerships in Europe while advancing cooperation in trade, technology, innovation, and strategic affairs.
A major highlight of the visit came in Slovakia, where President Peter Pellegrini conferred the country’s highest state honour, the Order of the White Double Cross (First Class), on Prime Minister Modi. The recognition was presented in acknowledgement of his contribution to strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation between India and Slovakia. The award is among the highest international honours received by the Indian leader during his tenure.
During his stay in Bratislava, Modi held discussions with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico on expanding economic and industrial collaboration. Both sides explored opportunities in sectors such as advanced manufacturing, automotive technology, innovation, electronics, and investment. The two countries also agreed to strengthen institutional mechanisms aimed at identifying new areas of economic partnership.
The Slovak visit carried symbolic importance as well. Senior Slovak leaders extended a warm diplomatic reception to the Indian delegation, underscoring the growing significance of India-Slovakia relations within the broader India-Europe framework.
Following his engagements in Slovakia, Prime Minister Modi travelled to France to participate in the G7 Summit held in Évian-les-Bains at the invitation of French President Emmanuel Macron. India attended the summit as a partner country, continuing its regular participation in discussions on major global challenges despite not being a G7 member.
At the summit, Modi engaged with world leaders on issues ranging from sustainable development and economic resilience to emerging technologies and global governance. India used the platform to highlight the concerns and priorities of developing nations, while advocating stronger international cooperation to address shared challenges.
The French leg of the visit also featured initiatives aimed at boosting innovation and technology partnerships. Modi joined President Macron for engagements focused on entrepreneurship, research collaboration, and emerging technologies, reflecting the expanding strategic partnership between the two countries.
Throughout the tour, India also showcased its cultural heritage through diplomatic outreach. Traditional handicrafts, textiles, artworks, and other cultural gifts presented to leaders in France and Slovakia highlighted the country’s emphasis on combining soft power with statecraft.
Describing the visit as productive and forward-looking, Indian officials said the outcomes are expected to contribute to stronger political engagement, deeper economic cooperation, and enhanced strategic coordination with European partners. The trip also reinforced India’s efforts to expand its global partnerships while positioning itself as a leading voice for the Global South in international forums.
