With superstar Rajinikanth’s Petta and Ajith’s Viswasam clashing at the box office by simultaneously hitting the screens on January 10, many were wondering which movie would win the reace.
In Chennai, Petta grossed Rs 1.12 crore and Viswasam is said to have collected 88 lakh. But the Thala starrer took Rs 3 crore lead in Tamil Nadu.
According to early estimates, Viswasam has grossed around Rs 15 crore on the first day in Tamil Nadu whereas Petta grossed around Rs 12 crore in the state. “But these are all figures of opening shows dominated by fans. The clear winner will be decided by the general audience in the days to come,” says a distributor.
Released approximately 40 days after the grand release of 2.0, Petta directed by Karthik Subbaraj and produced by Sun Pictures marks the return of Rajinikanth in a mass avater.
Tamil Nadu saw a clash of the titans at the box office with the release of Petta and Viswasam on the same day. Both Rajnikanth and Ajith enjoy massive superstardom in the state.
Visawsam has impressed the family audience and has also roped in more screens than Petta, which has given the film an edge. The release date of the film was announced way earlier, which turned out to be an advantage for the Ajith-starrer.
