Petrol bomb attack on BJP members in Chennai

State unit president of BJP State Tamilisai Soundararajan and the party’s national executive committee member H Raja were detained by the police along with 500 others cadres when they staged a protest in Chennai on Wednesday.

They had called for a State-wide protest condemning the murder of Hindu Munnani leader C Sasikumar in Coimbatore earlier this month. Sources said that the protest was initially  planned to be held in Valluvar Kottam, however due to some reasons it was shifted near Rajarathinam grounds in Egmore

Tension prevailed at EVK Sampath Road in Egmore on Wednesday evening, when BJP members, who were detained following an attempt to stage a protest without permission, claimed that a youth tried to hurl petrol bombs at them.

They were detained at Maharashtra Mandal and were to be released in the evening. Meanwhile, at around 5 pm, four youths came on two motorbikes and parked them in front of the gate. One of them was identified as Mohammed Meeran (21), of Anna Nagar working in an acid manufacturing company,.

It is said that he came with his friends to meet a person who stayed nearby in connection with a business deal. “Learning he was a Muslim, the BJP cadres allegedly tried to attack him,” said a police source.

Sasikumar (36) from Subramaniyampalayam who was on his way home was attacked by four-member gang with sickles at GN Mills in Thudiyalur in Coimbatore last week. Despite suffering 11 cut injuries, Sasikumar somehow managed to escape the attack, but later succumbed to his injuries in a private hospital.
