A specially-modified vehicle, which was to be used by Deputy Chief Minister and AIADMK coordinator O Panneerselvam for campaigning, met with a minor accident on Thursday.
Panneerselvam was not in the vehicle when the mishap took place near Naduvattam, between Udhagamandalam and Gudalur towns in the Nilgiris.
According to sources, the vehicle was proceeding with the rest of the VIP convoy when the driver took a sharp turn at a high speed, causing it land on its side.
Meanwhile, Panneerselvam, during his campaign across the delta districts, highlighted AIADMK’s role in resolving the vexatious Cauvery water sharing issue. Panneerselvam, who is also the coordinator of the AIADMK, visited Nagapattinam and Tiruvarur and Thanjavur garnering support for party candidates.
Panneerselvam alleged the DMK government was the reason why Tamil Nadu found itself ensconced in water disputes in the first place. He added that when Karnataka was building four huge dams across the river in the 1970s, M Karunanidhi, who was the CM, made a declaration in the SC that he did not have any objections, even as the rest of Tamil Nadu was protesting.
“It was our leader Amma who won the legal battle to publish the final order of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal in the gazette. Through a long legal battle, she saved Thanjavur region from turning into a desert without water (from Cauvery river),” he said.
The western districts of Coimbatore, Erode, Tiruppur, Karur and Namakkal were hit by power cuts between 2006 and 2011 when the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam was in power, Panneerselvam said.
