Legendary multifaceted personality of Tamil cinema, Panchu Arunachalam, died in Chennai today. He was 75 and he passed away at his residence at T Nagar.
Arunachalam was a writer, producer, director and lyricist. He is survived by two sons including actor Subbu Panchu and two daughters.
Panchu Arunachalam was mentored by Kavignar Kannadasan who was his uncle. He has also worked as a songwriter. He started producing films under his production banner named P. A. Arts.
As a writer, he has worked in 100 films. He has also written song lyrics for more than 200 films. In an interview, Subbu Panchu said about his father: ” My father, producer-writer Panchu Arunachalam, made me work as an assistant production manager under Balagopi for Guru Sishyan and a couple of other films in Tamil and Telugu. I was promoted as the executive producer when Michael Madhana Kama Rajan was made. Ever since, I’ve involved myself in all our productions till the recent Mayakannadi.”
He worked closely with him, including Rajinikanth, Ilaiyaraaja, Bharathiraaja, SP Muthuraman, Sivakumar, Sathyaraj, Prabhu, Radikaa, Khusbhu, Gangai Amaren among others
A nephew of celebrated lyricist Kannadasan, he is also known for introducing Ilaiyaraaja, and taking Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth to the masses.
