Finance Minister O Panneerselvam today chaired a Cabinet meeting at the Secretariat in Chennai for the first time since Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa was admitted to the Apollo Hospitals on September 22.
The Cauvery water issue, local body election, appointment of special officers for governing local bodies and upcoming by poll in three constituencies were said to be subjects of discussion in the meeting.
It is said that the Cabinet took stock of the fallout of the report submitted by the Cauvery High-level Technical Committee in the Supreme Court in which Tamil Nadu’s concerns have reportedly not been adequately addressed.
In two previous occasions too Panneerselvam has substituted for Jayalalithaa but this time things are different because the opposition in the state have been raising doubts about the transfer of portfolio.
Last week, Tamil Nadu Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao had allotted the portfolios held by Jayalalithaa including Home and Police, to Panneerselvam, till she could resume official duties.
The Raj Bhavan had then, in a release, said Paneerselvam, who holds the Administrative reforms portfolio, in addition to Finance, “will also preside over cabinet meetings.”
