One more TN Minister tests positive for Covid-19, record number of cases

Tamil Nadu Labour Welfare Minister Nilofer Kafeel has tested positive for Covid-19 and has quarantined herself at home in Chennai.

Nilofer is the fourth minister in Edappadi K Palaniswami’s Cabinet to test positive in less than a month. She is asymptomatic and home quarantined for three days now and adhering to health protocols, reports said.

She is the fourth Minister in Tamil Nadu cabinet to test positive, after KP Anbalagan (Higher Education), Sellur K Raju (Cooperation) and P Thangamani (Electricity). Her son and son-in-law have also tested positive for the virus.

Nilofer Kafeel, who represents Vaniyambadi segment in Tamil Nadu Assembly, has been residing at Vaniyambadi town. However, a few days back, she left for Chennai and since have been staying at her official residence in the capital.

Tamil Nadu reported a record number of 4,549 fresh COVID-19 cases and 69 deaths on Thursday, bringing its total numbers to 1,56,369 cases and 2,236 deaths respectively.

The state also recorded the highest single-day recoveries with 5,106 patients being discharged following treatment. The number of active cases stood at 46,714 on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Minister K  P Anbalagan, the first to test positive, was discharged from hospital on Wednesday. His colleagues, Sellur K Raju and P Thangamani, are still under Covid treatment in hospital.
