Officials check fitness of school buses, vans
Officials check fitness of school buses, vans: With schools in Tamil Nadu getting ready to be reopened on June 1, transport authorities are checking fitness of school buses and vans.
In Tambaram, teams comprising the Revenue Divisional Officer, G. Vimalraj, Tambaram RTO G. Venkateswaran and Education Department officials carried out checks of buses and vans operated by schools for ensuring safety of the school children.
Sources in the transport sector said the decision will ensure that safety measures are in place before the new academic year begins. Transporters must install safety measures. Sources added that the inspections during vacations will also prove beneficial for schools and parents as it will not hamper the daily schedules.
The Rules warrants formation of District-level Inter-Departmental Committee and School-Level Transport Committee, and requires drivers to maintain log books on daily basis to point out defects and get them rectified.
While parents seem to be laden with worry, schools on their part said the many challenges involved including getting good certified drivers on board dissuades them from operating fleets.
The Tamil Nadu Motor Vehicles Rules 2012 has set guidelines under as many as 16 heads to ensure the safety of private school vehicles.
Condition of vehicles, speed governor, first-aid box, emergency exit, fire extinguisher, experience and history of drivers are some of the things we are looking at. All documents are also being verified, officials said.
