Notorious rowdy and drug peddler shot dead in encounter in Chennai

A notorious rowdy, who is also a drug peddler, was shot dead at Ayanavaram in Chennai last Friday morning when he tried to escape after attacking a policeman who was part of a team of cops who cornered him at his hideout.

The deceased has been identified as Sankar, 49, who was involved in drug peddling at Ayanavaram and also in parts of North Chennai. Sankar was involved in four murders, four attempt to murder cases and 29 hurt and extortion cases, police said.

According to sources, a team led by Ayanavaram Inspector Natarajan attempted to arrest Sankar, a ganja peddler and a rowdy, when the incident happened.

Sources said that on seeing the police, Sankar started to attack them. He also hacked a Constable named Mubaraq. “Hence, Inspector Natarajan opened fire in self defence injuring Sankar,” they said.

The injured Sankar was taken to a hospital by the police, sources said and added that he was however declared dead by doctors. The incident has sent shock waves in the locality and higher officials have rushed to the spot.

The Ayanavaram police registered a case and forwarded it for a magisterial inquiry as per the routine procedure to comply with the guidelines. Senior police senior officials visited the encounter spot and further investigations are on
