Nominations begin for DMK GS, treasurer polls; Raja, Kanimozhi stay out

Nominations started today to contest for the post of the general secretary and the treasurer of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

Dismissing speculations, party leaders A Raja and Kanimozhi have said they would not contest for the post of DMK treasurer.

The general council of the DMK will meet via video conferencing on September 9 to elect the party general secretary and treasurer, its president M.K. Stalin announced on Tuesday.

The general secretary post fell vacant after the demise of K. Anbazhagan and the general council meeting, originally slated for March, was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Senior leaders S Durai Murugan and T R Baalu are likely to be unanimously elected as general secretary and treasurer, respectively, sources said.
Prior to that, the DMK had also convened a meeting of the party’s district secretaries this Thursday (September 3).

Elections for the post of General Secretary, the second most powerful position, was necessitated after incumbent K Anbazhagan, a fellow traveller of DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi, died on March 7, 2020. With Treasurer Durai Murugan, the senior-most in the party, expressing his interest to contest for the GS election, a new person has to be elected to his post.

DMK’s General Council is the highest policy-making body of the party and members of the GC elect President, General Secretary and Treasurer. The GC meet also comes as the political atmosphere in Tamil Nadu heats up with just eight months to go for the crucial Assembly Elections in the state.
