Continuing her tour of cyclone Gaja affected areas in Tamil Nadu for the second day, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharraman visited Thanjavur district and assured affected coconut farmers that the union government would extend all help to them.
People affected by Cyclone Gaja would be supplied with additional kerosene apart from their PDS allotment, Nirmala Sitharaman said.
Speaking at a consultative meeting with people and coconut farmers in Peravurani she said, “The Petroleum Minister assured additional kerosene would be made available at five places each in the Gaja-affected districts by Saturday evening,” Nirmala Sitharaman said.
Addressing the villagers at Neduvasal in Pudukottai, on the second day of her visit to the cyclone-affected areas, Nirmala Sitharaman said that people whose names did not figure in the socio-economic census data but had lost their houses could give their names to the Collector now.
The Centre would take efforts to sanction houses for them as well, she assured. Steps would also be taken to bring coconut saplings from Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha to enable the affected farmers go in for fresh plantations if saplings were not available in T.N. This would be done through the Coconut Development Board, the Minister said.
Speaking to reporters after visiting Peruvurani in Thanjavur district and interacting with farmers, she said that the Centre had despatched five trucks of kerosene to five relief centres and it would be distributed to the people Saturday.
