NIA conducts raids at Mannady, Vepery in Chennai

National Investigation Agency (NIA) raids were underway today at two locations (Vepery and Mannady) in Chennai and two locations in Nagapattinam district.

According to reports, the raids are in relation to Wahadat Islam Organization. The other two raids are underway at two locations at Nagapattinam.

An FIR has been already filed at Delhi in this case, A team headed by SP Rahul from Kochi is conducting these searches. The raids are happening based on the inputs they got from the International Bureau (IB).

The city offices of Wahdathe Islami Hind at Mannady and Vepery were searched by the investigating officers in connection with Easter Day blasts in Sri Lanka recently.
Three persons are being questioned in connection with the raids, reports said.

Officers claimed that the group had contact with some other banned Islamic organisations. They are also inquiring if they were in touch with the perpetrators of Easter Day blast which killed 259 people and left 1,000 persons injured.

Last month, Officials of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) questioned inmates of Central Jail here in an effort to probe their links with the Easter Day serial bombings in Sri Lanka. NIA officials questioned Bilal Malik, Panna Ismail and Police Fakrudeen housed in the Central Jail in Puzhal, here.

The questioning follows the recent raids in Coimbatore and Madurai in Tamil Nadu and the arrest of persons who are sympathisers of proscribed Islamic State (IS).
